La fundació de Carbons Ripoll es situa el 1880, amb l’obertura d’un petit negoci de venda de carbó mineral.
La família Ripoll, ja tenia un altre negoci, una espardenyeria situada a la Plaça Nova nª4 de la Vil·la de El Vendrell, ben a prop del museu Deu.
El sr. Josep Ripoll Purificación, l’any 1890, ja descarregava vagons de carbó mineral que després comercialitzava amb la venta al detall per les estufes i les cuines econòmiques de carbó fetes de ferro.
